As an online developer and consultant, I’m continuously discovering brand-new skills. Skillshare 2 Months… to stay up to date with the trade and make clients pleased. To do so, I’ve relied heavily on online learning over the past 5 years. Generally, when I wish to learn something brand-new, I just go to YouTube and key in a concern and hope for the best.
The majority of the time, I get videos taught by “experts” with endless ad breaks and pitches to purchase their merchandise. I mean, what else can you anticipate from “free courses.” Recently, fed up with the poor quality and questionable understanding shared on free platforms, I turned to an online learning platform I keep hearing a lot about: Skillshare.
Impressed by Skillshare’s premium totally free classes, I registered for an annual subscription (and scored a 40% discount rate, more on that in the Skillshare prices section) and dove deeper into the Skillshare courses used to premium members.
I will share my experience as a Skillshare student here in this extensive evaluation. While some reviews for online courses tend to be regurgitations of sales pages, everything you will check out comes straight from my own experience as a passionate student.
If you are trying to find a TLDR version of this evaluation, here it is:
The large amount of new content that is added to the platform weekly is enough to keep even the busiest of brains engaged. Whether you want to get a new skill to make your resume shine, restyle your house, or master a hobby “just for the hell of it,” you can easily find dozens of opportunities to level up your repertoire. Further, Skillshare’s generous payment plans for teachers implies that there’s no shortage of outstanding instructors producing brand-new and high-quality content regularly.
Now, if only there was more time in the day to learn everything!
Neighborhoods of like-minded students
Feeling part of a peer-group can be hard when you have specific niche interests like Board Game Style or Floral Embroideries. In between Skillshare’s Groups, Workshops, and varied trainers, you’re opening a gold mine of opportunity for connection and community structure. This is a huge perk for us “nerds” to feel part of something larger than our own specific efforts AND it enables us to discover not just from the professionals, but from each other.
Easy to use all around
It took me all of 5 minutes to create my account, login, browse for content I have an interest in, and discover a course that fit the costs. I was diving deep into my first course in less than 20 minutes, excited to find much more content to devour.
Congratulations to Skillshare for making a quickly navigable desktop AND mobile platform, and for consisting of a start/stop performance that synchronizes across devices.
In between the ability to “preferred” fantastic instructors and conserve Skillshare classes to individualized lists, not to mention the Discovery section of the Skillshare app, I am never ever for desire of brand-new material to find out. And the truth that I get to find out on MY schedule makes Skillshare the equivalent of the 100 emoji.

The Downsides (Cons) of Skillshare
These are the primary drawbacks of Skillshare:
Not fully available
Not every teacher ROCKS
The advertisements are bothersome, so you’ll want to pay
Not totally available
As I was checking courses and building my Skillshare evaluation, I was continually dissatisfied by the lack of closed captioning offered on the videos. This essentially makes the platform impossible to use for those who are hearing impaired and not able to read lips. Minus points for exclusivity!
Not every teacher ROCKS
The variation in quality of trainers can be a continual obstacle on your method to knowledge gain. Since being able to teach effectively is a hard-won ability in it of itself, it would be naive to believe that every instructor on the platform stands out at the fundamentals of mentor.
A good quality indicator is the number of trainees a course has actually hosted, as higher numbers tend to correlate with higher quality trainers. This isn’t always the case– some courses are simply specific niche enough to not appeal to the “masses” anyway.
Conclusion: is Skillshare Worth it?
The chance to find out for knowing’s sake is reason enough for me to comfortably declare that Skillshare deserves it. The hands-on jobs and ability to connect with others, consisting of specialists in your wanted fields of understanding, makes the $14 a month cost a bargain. The onus is on YOU to identify which courses would bring you the most worth, whether you intend to strengthen your resume with gleaming competitive abilities or assert yourself as an expert enthusiast.
Skillshare members can acquire much more than just brand-new skills from the courses. You’ll fall for discovering once again, satisfy competent and determined peers that will challenge and inspire you, and might find yourself addicted (nay, consumed!) with acquiring understanding.
